What is the IMPORTANCE OF THE GEAR RATIO IN GEAR UNITS?
When discussing gearboxes, the word “gear ratio” refers to the proportion between the system’s input and output speeds. A gearbox with a gear ratio of 12:1 simply indicates that one full rotation of the driven gear is made by the output gear for every 12 revolutions of the input (driving) gear.
This is frequently used to increase torque and decrease speed. The input gear in this specific example of a 12:1 gear ratio would turn very quickly, while the output gear would turn considerably more slowly. However, (assuming no energy loss from friction or other considerations) the torque, or turning force, on the output gear would be 12 times higher than on the input gear.
